A search for cure

Ever wondered why there is no cure for Rheumatoid Arthritis, Hepatitis B, AIDS or other chronic disorders?

Well, most of the research for new medicines is funded and carried out by pharmaceutical companies and as any business house, their interest lies in the continuity of the disease with regular consumption of medications. The business strategy would be defeated if people would get cured leading to a cessation of medicine use and a huge loss for these companies.

Pharmaceutical companies have done a wonderful job and have patented many new medicines - but most of them are for symptom relief or induction of remission (i.e. the disease becomes inactive for a period of time but may remit at a later date), very few actually lead to a permanent cure. Isn’t that strange. With the astronomical advances that medical science has made in the last few decades, we should atleast be able to effect a permanent cure for more disorders than our previous generations.

I hope that I am wrong and soon these companies will come out with pills that cure and not merely relieve symptoms.
