The Genesis of Superboy!
In the movie ‘Superman Returns,’ the portrayal of the birth of Superboy is a bit strange.
First the facts:-
- Human pregnancy lasts around 9 months
- Superman had disappeared for 5 years
- Louis Lane was in love with Superman
- Louis Lane and Richard did not know that the kid is Superman’s son
The assumption:-
- Louis Lane would wait for sometime for the return of Superman before she decides to move on with her life. This wait would technically depend on the amount of love she had for Superman. The more she loved him, the longer she would wait for him. So it would not be unreasonable to assume that she waited for a minimum of 1 year for his return.
Therefore Louis Lane would not only have discovered that she was pregnant but would also have delivered the boy before she started going around with her new hubby. Even if we reduce the time period of her ‘mourning’ from 1 year to 6 months, she still would have discovered that she was pregnant. Thus everyone would have known that the kid is not Richard’s son.
The explanations for this anomaly that I can think up of are:-
- Richard and Louis Lane started going around immediately after Superman disappeared
- The director had no idea of the normal duration of human pregnancy
- OR Superman’s (being from Krypton and therefore a different species) impregnation of Louis Lane resulted in (ab)normally prolonged pregnancy
