Can antioxidants prevent cancer?
There are a lot of conflicting reports that anti-oxidants are good at preventing cancers. Coutler et al, performed a meta-analysis and review of published trials in order to answer this question. The paper appears in the Journal of General Internal Medicine, July 2006 issue.
Thirty eight studies pertaining to the effect of Vitamin C or Vitamin E on individual cancers was studied and the relative risk calculated. The authors found that there is no statistical difference to support the hypothesis that eating vitamins C & E (which are known anti-oxidants) prevents cancer.
The systematic review of the literature does not support the hypothesis that the use of supplements of vitamin C or vitamin E in the doses tested helps prevent and/or treat cancer in the populations tested. There were isolated findings of benefit, which require confirmation.
