Staying active decreases risk of dying early

Do you really need to run or swim for an hour, daily to stay healthy?

An article published in July 12, 2006 issue of JAMA says that increased daily activity of any kind may decrease the overall risk for mortality.

The researchers divided 302 old patients (age 70 - 82 years) in three groups based on calorie consumption and followed them for a mean duration of 6.15 years. They found that for every 287 kcal/day there was a 30% decrease in mortality risk.

75 minutes of performing any or in combination of the following activities may help expend 287 kcal/day:-

  • Vacuuming
  • Mopping the floor
  • Washing windows
  • Child/adult care
  • Walking at 2.5 miles/hour
  • and many other types of non-sitting work

So if you don’t like exercising, play “hide & seek” with your grandchildren and add a few more years to your life.
