Tobacco: More Deadly Than AIDS:
Tobacco: More Deadly Than AIDS Everybody knows that tobacco kills but the latest global estimates are a startling reminder of just how deadly the “ noxious weed †can be. According to a new report from the American Cancer Society, cigarettes and associated tobacco products kill more than 5 million people around the world each year, or about 2 million more folks than die of AIDS.
If current smoking trends continue, health experts predict 1 billion men and women will die of tobacco-related diseases, up from 100 million in the 20th century.
And much of the health burden is starting to shift from the developed world to the developing world, according to the ACS report, which is the first-ever worldwide Cancer Atlas and contains a lot information from the World Health Organization and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control.
One out of every two men in the developing world smoke cigarettes (compared to 35% of men in the developed world.) Women in the developing world still lag men in smoking but are fast catching up.
